Churches and monasteries are an integral part of life for the island’s inhabitants.

• Saint Gerasimos:This monastery is the most important Christian sight in Kefalonia. It was built in 1560 by Agios Gerasimos, the patron saint of the island. For the local people, Saint Gerasimos is simply "The Saint", that’s why “Gerasimos” is the most common name on the island.
• Saint Andreas Milapidias: Is located in Peratata and is one of the oldest monasteries on the island. It was named after the Milapidia trees that grow there. Agios Andreas (Saint Andrew) of Milapidia is a monastery inhabited by nuns only.
• Panagia Fidousa: :Is located in Markopoulo and is also known as Panagia Lagouvarda. Panaghia Fidousa of Kefalonia is one of the island’s famous churches, as thousands of pilgrims come to the church every year to witness the appearance of small snakes with four small black dots on their heads in the shape of a cross! This takes place from August 6th to August 16th.
• Atros Monastery: :Is located near Poros and is the oldest monastery in Kefalonia as it dates back to the 8th century. The Monastery is situated on top of a hill overlooking the Ionian Sea, at an altitude of 760 meters. Today, the Monastery has no Monks living there, but is worth visiting for the medieval architecture alone.
• Kipouria Monastery: This Monastery is over 250 years old. It was named after the many gardens the monks cultivate there and is built on the edge of a cliff, 100 meters above the sea. The monastery hosts the island’s most incredible sunsets!
• Saint Varvara: The small chapel of Agia Varvara is located outside Argostoli, in a cave under one of the island’s main country roads. According to folklore, in 1912 a child fell off the road and down into the ravine. The child escaped without a scratch! A chapel was built in the cave to honor Saint Barbara, whom we celebrated December 4th every year.
