The Katavothres in Argostoli is one of the most popular sights on the island, as the water disappears through the cracks near the coast, it courses down under the entire southern part of the island and flows out through Melissani cave.

Melissani cave is located in Sami, on the island’s east coast. Inside is the emerald green Melissani Lake. The ancient remains discovered in the cave revealed a sacred place dedicated to the God Pan and strengthened the mystery of Melissani cave. According to the legend, Melissanthi was a nymph who committed suicide on the lake because the God Pan rejected her love. Another cave near Sami is Drogarati cave. It was discovered 300 years ago when an earthquake exposed its main entrance. The age of the cave is estimated at about 100,000,000 years old and only part of it is accessible to the public; due to its incredible acoustics it has hosted many cultural events. Other notable sights in Kefalonia are St. George Castle and DeBosset Bridge which crosses Kutavo lagoon. Kounopetra, the beacons of Agioi Theodoroi and Gero-gombo are also must see attractions on the island.
